Freedom Sound is the debut album by The Jazz Crusaders, released in 1961 on the Pacific Jazz label. The album is a blend of hard bop, soul-jazz, and R&B influences, showcasing the band's unique ability to merge creative improvisation with accessible melodies.
The album features six tracks, including the title track Freedom Sound by Joe Sample, which is an eight-minute composition that develops from a mournful piano melody to a powerful, unified group performance. Other notable tracks include The Geek by Wilton Felder and M.J.S. Funk by Wayne Henderson.
The Jazz Crusaders at that time consisted of Wayne Henderson on trombone, Wilton Felder on tenor saxophone, Joe Sample on piano and Stix Hooper on drums. On this album the Jazz Crusaders added Roy Gaines on guitar and Jimmy Bond on bass.
