Sugilite is a rare mineral found in the Kalahari Manganese Fields of South Africa. It comes in several forms with the most common being the slab form in Matrix, followed by semi gel variety, followed by the fibrous variety. The fibrous variety is found in three types; the loosely compacted variety which is the most rare followed by two varieties of tightly compacted varieties. One of which is stable enough to be cut and polished into cabochons and is worth a fortune. Rarer still is the pure gel variety followed by the rarest of all which is crystallized Sugilite found in the 80s at the wessels mine. This specimen has these fully terminated precious micro crystals growing off of the Matrix with a myriad of other minerals including Pectolite and Quartz. Specimens such as these hardly ever hit the market and when they do they almost immediately picked up by collectors. This is a small cabinet sized specimen.
